This Sydney duo, via way of Darwin, have forged a solid following with their regular shows at the Hotel Hollywood ‘Folk Club’ nights (which you’ll now be able to find at it’s new home OAF). The pairing’s debut EP will be out June 1.  ’Home’ is a great little folky toe tapper. Boy girl harmonies, geetar pluckin and some nice string moments.

It’s Sydney and London born sounds from Pat, Andrew & Nik from Lost Valentinos. They’re creating some dark, techno slingers that are equal parts dancefloor/dungeon.

Keep Holding On - CSMNT61

Sydney’s Winter People have been steadily building their sound over the past three to four years. It didn’t help that in 2009 two band members moved abroad to study & broke the bands’ momentum, now they’re back together and set to release their debut full-length this year.

Boasting two violinists and five vocalists they can create a pretty massive sound; think Fleet Foxes x The National, it’s a real bombastic folk sound and check out lead singer Dylan Baskind’s captivating voice.

Gallons – Winter People

Not  a lot can be said of Townsville’s Cape York, other than he crafts some gorgeous 90s guitar pop. With almost no online presence to speak of, I stumbled across him almost by accident and I’m so glad I did.

He lives across the road from Townsville’s two main music venues the Mansfield Hotel and The Venue. It’s got that shambolic Wilco, Broken Social Scene air about it. He recorded this song in his home studio slash backyard shed, while the kids were at school.

ColourBlind – Cape York

Thrupence is Melbourne producer/artist Jack Vanzet. I’m in love with his Voyages EP, mainly because of the way it makes me feel. It’s emotive: Summer landscapes of blisteringly hot sand and haze. He’s got Seekae’s beatsy electronica down pat, but they’re often wrapped in a warmer coating.

This is Josh Moriarty from Miami Horror’s new band. ‘Love Like This’ is a genre/decade defying tune with a whole lotta swagger. Between the organ, brass section and scuzzed out guitars you almost miss how good the vocals are – very Stephen Patterson ala Brooklyn’s White Rabbits.

These two lovely ladies from Brisbane, studied music together and it’s obvious they have a pretty good understanding of how one another play. Love the way this song very quickly turns away from it’s innocence and becomes an emotionally defiant teen; all in the space of 3:47. Seltmann, Blasko and Throsby eat ya heart out.

A self-titled EP will be with us mid 2012 the girls say. Keep an eye on their bandcamp.

A Good Thing - The Phoncurves [download]

Tim Derricourt has been a busy little bee whipping up a solo EP (possibly in spurts) while writing a new Dappled Cities record. It’s hard not to listen to this stuff without listening out for Dappled, mainly because of Tim’s such distinct vocals. If explaining it to a n00b you’d say it’s Zonoscope-era Cut Copy meets the often emotional delivery of DC. There are four tracks and they’re all strong the only exception disc opener Nowhere To Run – the windyness of Easy High and Knocks got me a touch more excitable.

Knocks – Swimwear

Remember Sydney indie band Soft Tigers (Mr Icecream and M.A.R.I.A. should jig ya memory). Well Bucky Toller from that band and Mark Falkland from Young and Restless teamed up with their tax lawyer pal Nick as OADC (or Old Ace Dads Club).

They’ve all got proper jobs (example Nick the lawyer) and kids. They’re calling themselves a “daggy dad garage band” – I love it. It’s way more than that though- they recorded this rollicky jam with Bruce Callaway – often credited as being an early member of The Saints – disputed by the man himself, but you get the idea. Yeah that this is gonna be awesome. It’s off kilter vocal drawl and horn hoedown makes ita super addictive jam. There’s an album on the way too so keep your ears out for OADC.

Stino’s My Story (My Life) is a rough around the edges, sorta innocent take on the fat and greasy stuff from o’ USA way. It’s wants to be one of those super produced hip hop jams with a massiv orchestra arrangement – but to tell you the truth the best thing about Stino is that the boy’s got flow and I wanna listen again.
