Tim Derricourt has been a busy little bee whipping up a solo EP (possibly in spurts) while writing a new Dappled Cities record. It’s hard not to listen to this stuff without listening out for Dappled, mainly because of Tim’s such distinct vocals. If explaining it to a n00b you’d say it’s Zonoscope-era Cut Copy meets the often emotional delivery of DC. There are four tracks and they’re all strong the only exception disc opener Nowhere To Run – the windyness of Easy High and Knocks got me a touch more excitable.

They’ve all got proper jobs (example Nick the lawyer) and kids. They’re calling themselves a “daggy dad garage band” – I love it. It’s way more than that though- they recorded this rollicky jam with Bruce Callaway – often credited as being an early member of The Saints – disputed by the man himself, but you get the idea. Yeah that this is gonna be awesome. It’s off kilter vocal drawl and horn hoedown makes ita super addictive jam. There’s an album on the way too so keep your ears out for OADC.

Stino’s My Story (My Life) is a rough around the edges, sorta innocent take on the fat and greasy stuff from o’ USA way. It’s wants to be one of those super produced hip hop jams with a massiv orchestra arrangement – but to tell you the truth the best thing about Stino is that the boy’s got flow and I wanna listen again.

I have no idea where you can find Stino’s online presence – but he handed this in to FBi and we played it so now I’m blogging about it yo.

Conjuring up a likeness to fellow city dweller Jono Boulet with his all-consuming percussive milieu, Fitz has more awareness of the space around him I feel.

Floating vocal melodies, delicate piano touch and a sense for the unusual fill these songs with delight, all in the right quantities too. L’esprit de Escalier is one of my picks, with dissonant flamenco chords and a balmy summers night haze – it’s a winner.

Jack Ladder (Sydney’s Tim Rogers) has returned promising a cataclysmic followup to his 2008 record Love Is Gone. Slowly turning into this mysterious 80s incarnation of a teddy boy, Ladder’s music is becoming far more unsettling. He’s transformed that innate pastoral bluesman into something much more haunting and powerful.

Cold Feet sees Ladder take on his inner Ian Curtis, mixing it with Kirin J. Callinan’s undulating guitar drones and PVT drummer Laurence Pike’s 70s snare punches. It’s super evocative and the dark video clip has the right idea, apart from the horrendous acting from the gaunt model (Roger’s gf?).
